Fermenting For Your Pets
Don't forget our furry and feathered friends, fermenting for your pets is great for their health too! Make them healthy gut friendly fermented food.

Our pets benefit from fermented food as well
As it is for humans, the benefits of eating fermented food for our pets are many. Fermented foods are responsible for vitamin and mineral absorption, supporting the immune system and protecting against illness. Ferments are great for breaking down plant matter, making them easier to digest and absorb, aiding in digestion, reducing gas and diarrhoea, as well as reducing bad breath in dogs. You can overcome a lot of the ills of commercial pet food with the addition of some fermented food to their diet.
It is important to consult with your vetinarian before making any significant changes to their diet.
Yoghurt and kefir made from goat or coconut-milk are excellent natural probiotics for dogs, easily mixed in with their usual food. The scoby from kombucha can be given as a treat to pets, and chickens will even chase each other for it. However the kombucha liquid isn't suitable for animals due to its alcohol content. Chickens greatly benefit from fermented corn, freeze it to make a cold treat on a hot summer day.
How to incorporate fermented food into their diet.
It's important to start slowly to allow their digestive system time to adjust to the change in their diet. By small I mean a tablespoon a time, added to their regular meal. Gradually increase the amount.
Avoid vegetables that are toxic to dogs, such as onions and garlic. Try dog-friendly vegetables such as carrots, cucumbers and green beans with the addition of ginger, turmeric or oregano. If your cat is a little hesitant to try the new food, mix some in with sardines - this will increase the appeal while also adding omega-3 fatty acids to their diet.
